Call for Participants — THATCamp New England 2010

About THATCamp

Wentworth Institute of Technology in partnership with Brandeis University, Brown University, UMass Amherst, and Central Connecticut State University is pleased to announce the first THATCamp New England in 2010. The first THATCamp New England will be held on Saturday, November 13, and Sunday, November 14, at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Humanities and Technology Camp—or THATCamp—is a user-generated “unconference” in the digital humanities. Instead of being constructed around a specific theme or discipline, the program is based on attendee interests and is agreed upon at the beginning of the event. An unconference relies heavily on interaction and face-to-face conversations. THATCamp participants present their work, share their knowledge, and actively collaborate with fellow participants.

During THATCamp, sessions will likely range from discussions of current issues in digital scholarship, pedagogy, and curation to software demos, training sessions, and lightning talks. In other words, participants are neither expected nor encouraged to present formally arranged talks, papers, or panels. Prior to the event, participants will be invited to contribute to the THATCamp New England website and share their ideas for potential THATCamp sessions. Once at the event, they will collectively agree on the sessions where those conversations will take place.

About BootCamp

THATCamp New England is pleased to offer a digital humanities BootCamp on the first day of THATCamp. This will consist of four educational, hands-on sessions on how to use technology in the humanities. Through funding from the Mellon Foundation, we are able to offer micro-fellowships in the amount of $500 to four individuals who participate in all the BootCamp sessions and write a brief report/evaluation. The session topics have not yet been finalized but workshop topics will be similar to the following:

  • Digitisation Fundamentals
  • Transcribing and Describing Primary Sources
  • Multimedia Design for Visual, Auditory, and Interactive Electronic Environments
  • Geographical Information Systems in the Digital Humanities
  • Using Omeka As a Digital Archive for Researchers and Librarians

How to Apply

THATCamp is open to anyone with an interest in humanities and technology: faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students, teachers, librarians, archivists, museum professionals, university staff and administrators, educational technologists, designers, developers, hackers, public historians, artists, writers, and more.

Unfortunately, there is only space for approximately 90 participants at THATCamp New England so we will need to do some vetting. To apply, please visit the application form.

Applications will be reviewed on the first of each month, and acceptances will be sent out on a rolling basis. The final deadline for applications is Thursday, September 30, 2010.
