This is the sort of digital humanities I evolved into without ever knowing it had a name. I wrote a blog post that seems potentially usefully related–a lot of it about how I reinvented a number of wheels because I didn’t know what was out there. www.phdeviate.org/2010/07/27/digital-tools/

I believe it was the first time our department offered a graduate seminar devoted exclusively to digital scholarship. It really introduced me to a world I knew almost nothing about (beyond being a sporadic end user of social media). This course was one of the most transformative experiences of my graduate career. So, the seed was successfully planted. My struggle has been how to continue to develop my fledging interests and, importantly, my minimal skills in the absence of an existing or clear structure to support me. So, one question I think departments (particularly in places without digital technology centers or hubs that devote resources to student work) must ask is: what happens after the class? Where will students find guidance, support, training, etc., to continue developing? I’m all for DIY but with so little time to waste in grad school, clearer path to advancement or development are useful.
